Lookout Trail Loop - Redfield New York Cross Country Ski Trails
Preview: One of the finest commercial cross-country ski centers in New York State is also its newest. Established in 1998, the Salmon Hills Cross-Country Ski Resort is located in the stateÕs great Salmon Wilderness, within the snow belt on the Tug Hill Plateau. ItÕs not unusual for Salmon Hills to get 6 or more feet of lake-effect snow in a twenty-four-hour period. While the Syracuse region averages about 150 inches of snow annually, Salmon Hills can get twice or three times as much. Located on 600 acres of forested land adjacent to the 8-mile Salmon River Reservoir, the resort is ideally suited for skiers and snowshoers. Some trails are lighted for night skiing and a few have been designated for snowshoeing. A tubing hill with a lift also adds to the winter fun at this forest resort nestled in the backcountry of Oswego County. Surface quality: Groomed, double tracked and packed for both classic and skate skiing. Fees: yes.

Bill's Belly Trail Loop - Boylston New York Cross Country Ski Trails
Preview: The heavy snowfall is one of Tug HillÕs most unique recreational assets. While the Tug Hill is not a wilderness area in its strict sense, its densely forested terrain can become confusing even to the most seasoned hiker or cross-country skier. The weather in the region is unpredictable, especially in winter. The plateau is known for its abundant snow, spectacular scenery, and great trail systems. The snowÑnearly 300 inches annuallyÑcomes earlier than in most ther areas in New York State and lasts well into April. For years local cross-country skiers enjoyed their sport on the miles of logging roads, jeep trails, foot paths, abandoned highways, and frozen streambeds that lace the 40,000 acres of state lands, forests, and wildlife areas in the Tug Hill region. Surface quality: Groomed and tracked (usually weekly). Fees: yes.
